Criminal law press review – 2–8 October 2026

The most-reported criminal cases in Hungary this week, in brief, and what the law says about them. Everyone concerned is presumed innocent: only a final court judgment can find anyone guilty.

1. Suspect interview in the phone case

The Central Investigating Chief Prosecutor’s Office questioned the Prime Minister as a suspect on suspicion of theft, after Parliament suspended his immunity on 28 September – at his own request as well. He is suspected of having taken a phone from a man who was filming him at a Budapest club in June 2024, and of then throwing the device into the Danube. The suspect did not admit the offence, put forward a substantive defence and called the proceedings a political provocation. (Telex)

Legal background: the seriousness of theft depends primarily on the value of the item taken; below HUF 50,000 it is, as a rule, a petty offence. The court must also examine whether there was an intention of unlawful appropriation. Being named a suspect is neither an indictment nor a verdict. Theft →

2. Man suspected of killing his elderly grandmother (Budapest, District II)

On 2 October a man allegedly killed his elderly grandmother during a heated argument; neighbours called the police. On the motion of the Budapest Chief Prosecutor’s Office, the Buda Central District Court ordered one month of pre-trial detention for the suspect, who has a criminal record; the decision is final. (Origo)

Legal background: homicide committed against a person whose ability to defend themselves is limited by age is an aggravated offence, punishable by 10 to 20 years or life imprisonment. Pre-trial detention is not a punishment: after the first month, the grounds for keeping it in place must be reviewed again. Homicide → · Arrest and detention →

3. Two-billion-forint VAT fraud: ten people indicted

According to the indictment of the Bács-Kiskun County Chief Prosecutor’s Office, between 2021 and 2024 fictitious invoicing chains were built around EU imports of frozen chicken breast and soybean meal, and the companies at the end of the chains did not pay the VAT; the loss to the budget exceeds HUF 2 billion. The accused include the principal defendant, who allegedly controlled the companies, a tax adviser and several nominee directors. The Kecskemét Regional Court will decide the case. (Infostart)

Legal background: the penalty for budget fraud rises with the size of the loss, and commission on a commercial basis or in a criminal conspiracy makes it heavier still. In cases with many defendants, a key question is who knew what about the scheme – the liability of a nominee director or an adviser can differ substantially from that of the principal defendant. Tax and budget fraud →

4. Drugs allegedly sold to minors as well (Hernádvécse)

A 45-year-old woman and her 46-year-old husband are suspected of regularly selling drugs to several buyers, including people under 18. The Encs police questioned them as suspects, took both into custody and requested their pre-trial detention. (Zsaruhírek)

Legal background: if, as suspected, minors also received the drugs, the offence is classified more seriously. The penalty is also influenced by the pure active-substance content of the seized material, so the result of the expert analysis is decisive. Drug offences →

5. Set off with an icy windscreen, fatally hit a cyclist (Tolna County)

According to the charges, in March 2025 a 28-year-old lorry driver only partly cleared his frozen windscreen and, without braking, hit a 63-year-old cyclist riding lawfully ahead of him, who died at the scene. The Szekszárd District Prosecutor’s Office is seeking a suspended prison sentence, a fine and a driving ban; the Paks District Court will decide the case. (Origo)

Legal background: negligently causing a fatal road accident is punishable by 1 to 5 years’ imprisonment. The technical expert opinion, the defendant’s record and compensation of the damage weigh heavily in the judgment. Traffic offences →

6. Theatre burglar caught in costume (Budapest, District VII)

An 18-year-old man allegedly smashed a theatre’s emergency exit with the base of a parking sign, changed into costumes laid out for a performance and gathered electronic devices to take away; police caught him inside the building. He was questioned on suspicion of theft committed with force against property. (Index)

Legal background: theft committed with force against property is a criminal offence regardless of the value involved. When the perpetrator is caught at the scene, the line between an attempt and a completed offence may also be in question; young age can be taken into account as a mitigating factor. Property offences →
