The most-reported criminal cases in Hungary this week, in brief, and what the law says about them. Everyone concerned is presumed innocent: only a final court judgment can find anyone guilty.
1. Pre-trial detention in the ventilator case (Győr)
The Győr District Court ordered the pre-trial detention of two suspects in the case linked to the 2020 purchases of ventilators and masks. According to the suspicion, the alleged criminal organisation may have laundered more than HUF 3 billion of proceeds and evaded about HUF 660 million in tax; according to the authorities, the detained woman kept the books of the company network, while the man withdrew cash and handled contacts with the ministry. The court cited the risk of absconding, hiding and obstructing the evidence. (Zsaruhírek)
Legal background: the court first orders pre-trial detention for a maximum of one month and may then extend it by up to three months at a time. At every decision, defence counsel can argue for a less restrictive measure, such as criminal supervision. Custody and pre-trial detention →
2. Prosecution seeks life imprisonment over a stabbing (Budapest, District XVIII)
The Budapest Chief Prosecutor’s Office has charged a 26-year-old man with homicide committed with particular cruelty. According to the indictment, in July 2025, after drinking together, he got into an argument in his flat with a casual acquaintance and stabbed him several times with a pocket knife; the victim died within minutes. The prosecution is seeking life imprisonment in a strict-regime prison. (Zsaruhírek)
Legal background: homicide committed with particular cruelty carries 10 to 20 years or life imprisonment. The qualification can be challenged: the number of stab wounds alone does not necessarily amount to particular cruelty. Homicide →
3. Untaxed e-cigarettes: a well-known influencer among those detained
According to the financial investigators of the Hungarian Tax and Customs Administration (NAV), three men allegedly brought 14,000 untaxed electronic cigarettes into Hungary from Slovakia, acting in a criminal conspiracy and on a commercial basis, to sell them on the black market; the loss to the state budget may exceed HUF 47 million. One of the suspects is a well-known social-media personality. The court ordered the pre-trial detention of all three men. (Zsaruhírek)
Legal background: the penalty for budget fraud depends on the size of the financial loss, and committing it in a criminal conspiracy or on a commercial basis means a more serious qualification. If the accused makes good the loss before the indictment, the sentence can be significantly reduced. Tax and budget fraud →
4. A kilo of amphetamine in the fridge (Abony)
On 28 October, police searching a man’s flat in Abony seized 1,031 grams of amphetamine hidden in the refrigerator, together with bags and scales. The man was taken into custody on suspicion of drug trafficking, and his pre-trial detention has been requested. (Zsaruhírek)
Legal background: what counts is not the gross weight of the seized substance but its pure active-ingredient content: for amphetamine, over 10 grams of active ingredient is a significant quantity, for which trafficking can carry 5 to 20 years or life imprisonment. Drug offences →
5. Drunk and on the phone, she hit a pole with her child in the car (Mezőhegyes)
On 27 October, according to the police, a woman read a message on her phone while driving, left the road and hit a pole; her four-year-old son was also in the car. The breathalyser indicated alcohol, and the driver said she had been drinking before setting off. Criminal proceedings have been opened. (Zsaruhírek)
Legal background: the roadside breathalyser is only a screening test: in criminal law a driver is drunk if their blood alcohol exceeds 0.50 per mille or their breath alcohol exceeds 0.25 mg/l, which must be proven by a certified measurement or a blood test. The presence of a child may be an aggravating circumstance in sentencing. Drink-driving →
6. Broke in, then started cooking (Budaörs)
Returning home at dawn on 18 October, the owner of a flat in Budaörs found an unknown 22-year-old man inside. According to the police, the man had taken HUF 100,000 from a drawer and then cooked in the kitchen, damaging pans worth about HUF 250,000. When confronted, he handed the money back and said a voice had told him to go inside. Proceedings for theft have been opened. (Zsaruhírek)
Legal background: unlawfully entering a home can make a theft a more serious offence. Where the behaviour is unusual, a forensic psychiatric assessment of criminal capacity may also arise in the proceedings, which can fundamentally affect criminal liability. Theft →
